Conference Summary

This day-long program explored how courts and local communities can collaborate to address homelessness.  Chief Justice Ronald M. George opened day, which also featured presentations by homeless and community court project representatives from California and New York. 

 

Participants included judges, attorneys, service providers and representatives from city and county governments.  Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky provided an enlightening keynote luncheon address on local efforts and the process involved in establishing the Homeless Court in Santa Monica. Facilitated, regional break-out sessions were held to encourage local collaboration among various entities. 

 

The day closed with a lively panel discussion of a variety of efforts in progress on the local and state level. Panelists Assemblymember Mike Feuer, Senator Gilbert Cedillo, Senator Darrell Steinberg, Santa Monica Mayor Richard Bloom and Santa Monica City Councilmember Bobby Shriver discussed their take on innovative solutions to homelessness.
